Aspen , 681 Residence
Three pavilions step down a forested slope east of Aspen, framed in steel and clad in stone, glass, and dark timber.
The 681 Residence replaces a 1980s house on a 19-acre property east of Aspen. The new home is set on the northwest corner of the site, framed by dense forest and close views of the surrounding mountains.
The house is about 10,750 sq ft and is broken into three pavilions, each set to follow the natural topography as the site steps down the slope. Breezeways and a bridge link the pavilions, and the garage and motor court sit at the arrival level.
The kitchen pavilion holds the kitchen, a pantry, a mudroom, and a dining room that opens onto a covered terrace and outdoor kitchen. The great room pavilion is centered on a great room with a fireplace, which opens to the terrace on two sides. Its lower level holds a media room, two bedrooms with private baths, and a gym that looks out to the aspens. The bedroom pavilion includes a primary suite with a dressing room and guest bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and balcony.
The house is framed in steel, which allows large sliding glass doors throughout the main living spaces, along with floor-to-ceiling and corner windows that connect the interiors to the forest. Stone, glass, and dark-stained timber clad the exterior, and warm stone and quartered wood continue throughout the interior. Outside, a lap pool and stone retaining walls step down toward the aspen groves. The house is designed to current building and energy codes, with solar power and on-site energy storage, and the project also includes a separate agricultural barn. Construction is now in the interior finishes stage.
